Mum’s Chocolate Cake

Remember when Mum stayed home & had time to bake cakes? Who could resist a chocolate cake, they’re still as popular today as they were back then. Here’s a traditional recipe from the 60’s – the essential, easy to make, easy to remember childhood Chocolate Cake Recipe.

The smell of this baking in the kitchen when you got home from school was the most wonderful aroma! You just wished it was going to be cool enough to get out of the tin for a slice before dinner! It was always iced and for special ocassions, split with whipped cream in the center.

What does bake in a “moderate” oven mean? What temperature would that be? My father in law will be 65 on the 21st of April and he is always talking about a moist cake his mother would make him. I was hoping this might be it!

My Dad was the King in our kitchen. I remember on the weekends he would bake us either a chocolate or vanilla sponge. Unfortunately, when dear ol’ dad popped his clogs he took the recipe with him. When I saw this recipe I was tempted to try it for myself and see if it was the same as Dad’s. It is. It has now become a weekly treat – complete with chocolate frosting & coconut.
